A pre-assembled, ready to use, 'passive', diffusion type, air sampler for measuring the concentration of specified contaminant gases, which may be present in a particular place, is based on established physical principles; .cndot. that gas molecules in an atmospheric space diffuse in a random manner so as to be uniformly distributed throughout that space; .cndot. the rate of diffusion of the contaminant gas into the sampler is controlled by the molecular weight of the contaminant gas, the absolute temperature, the absolute pressure difference between the gas on the two sides of an orifice, and the dimensions of the orifice. The pressure difference of the contaminant gas across the orifice is maintained at a maximum value by means of an absorptive 'sink' placed inside the sampling container.
