An improved file for use in the endodontic preparation of a root canal, the file having a handle portion at one end and an active working portion tapering toward the distal end, the active portion having an external surface with at least one helical flute forming a helical scraping edge and, preferably, an axially adjacent land, the working portion having areas or zones of reduced surfaces that contact root canal surfaces during use. Preferably the zones are a plurality of axially spaced zones of reduced diameter so that the total length of file working portion in contact with canal wall surfaces during use is reduced. In manufacturing the improved file, a plurality of axially spaced zones of reduced diameter are formed on the working portion of a conventional file, including helical flutes and lands as desired, wherein the file of the invention includes an undulating external working portion profile.

L'invention concerne un foret amélioré d'endodontie pour la préparation d'un canal radiculaire, avec un manche à une extrémité et une partie active se rétrécissant vers l'extrémité distale. La partie active comporte une surface externe ayant au moins une gorge hélicoïdale formant un bord de grattage hélicoïdal et, de préférence, une face axiale adjacente. La partie active comporte des zones de surface réduite qui sont en contact avec les surfaces de canal radiculaire à l'utilisation. De préférence, les zones en question se présentent sous la forme d'une pluralité de zones axialement espacées, de diamètre réduit, si bien que la longueur totale de la partie active en contact avec la surface des parois de canal radiculaire à l'utilisation est réduite. Dans la fabrication de ce foret amélioré, on forme sur la partie active d'un foret classique plusieurs zones espacées axialement, de diamètre réduit, y compris les gorges hélicoïdales voulues et les faces correspondantes entre ces gorges. Dans ces conditions, le foret considéré offre un profil externe de partie active ayant une configuration en ondulation.
