Composite adherends (100, 106) are joined by disposing reinforcing elements (108, 110) through the thickness of the two composite adherends (100, 106). At least a number of the reinforcing elements (108, 110) extend from the joint surfaces (112, 114) of each adherend. The adherends (100, 106) are assembled so that the joint surface (112) of one adherend (100) faces the joint surface (114) of the other adherend (106) which defines a joint (107) between each of the adherends (100, 106). The extending reinforcing elements (108, 110) are interstiatially disposed in the joint region (107). An adherent (109) is disposed within the joint region (107) and about the interstitially disposed reinforcing elements (108, 110) to provide an improved and reinforced joint.
