A size reduction apparatus which comminutes material by impact and attrition. The apparatus features are impeller that rotates in a frusto-conical shaped comminution chamber disposed in a comminution housing. A propeller rotates with the impeller to expel comminuted material from the housing. A comminuted material outlet is tangentially oriented with respect to the housing. The advantage is an energy efficient size reduction apparatus that is capable of producing fine particles at low temperatures.
