A seismic safety valve has a housing with a fluid inlet, a fluid outlet and a fluid passageway interconnecting the inlet and outlet. A recess is formed inside the housing along the fluid passageway, with a valve seat located adjacent to and below the recess. A valve member, made of a magnetic material, is in the fluid passageway and movable between a first position in the recess and a second position on the valve seat. The valve member closes the fluid passageway in thesecond position and opens the fluid passageway in the first position. The recess supports the valve member so that the valve member is movable from the recess upon the housing being subjected to a predetermined amount of seismic activity under forces generated by the predetermined amount of seismic activity and gravity. At least one electromagnet is on the housing outside of the fluid passageway. The electromagnet can be used to automatically activate the valve by moving the valve member, or may be used to reset the valve after the valve has been activated.

Un évidement est formé à l'intérieur du logement le long du passage pour le fluide, et un siège de vanne se trouve près de l'évidement et sous ce dernier. Un obturateur de vanne, fabriqué d'un matériau magnétique, est placé dans le passage pour le fluide et est mobile entre une première position dans l'évidement et une deuxième position sur le siège de vanne. L'obturateur de vanne ferme le passage pour le fluide lorsqu'il est à la deuxième position et il l'ouvre lorsqu'il est à la première. L'évidement supporte l'obturateur de manière que ce dernier soit mobile à partir de l'évidement lorsque cwlui-ci est lui-même soumis à un niveau déterminé d'activité sismique sous l'effet des forces produites par ce niveau déterminé d'activité sismique et la gravité. Au moins un électro-aimant se trouve sur le logement à l'extérieur du passage pour le fluide. L'électro-aimant peut servir à activer automatiquement la vanne en déplaçant l'obturateur, ou il peut servir à réarmer la vanne après qu'elle a été activée.
