A heating appliance (10) has a firebox (26) and an ash chamber (28). A primary preheating chamber (46) is located beneath the ash chamber (28). The preheating chamber (46) is U-shaped in cross section and raised portions or arms (48, 50) extend upwardly and define opposite sides of the ash chamber (28). The upper flat surfaces (52, 54) of the arms (48, 50) serve as mounting blocks to support a grate above the ash chamber (28).
