A spreader bar device (10) for a patient handling hoist, comprises a housing (12) for connection to the hoist, a spool (16) which is rotatably mounted on the housing (12), an elongate flexible hoist attachment element (18) for attachment to the hoist and which is extendably windable on the spool (16), opposing elongate spreader arms (14) which extend from the hous-ing (12) and which straddle the spool (16), and attachment means (32) for attaching a patient harness to the spreader arms (14). The spreader arms (14) are pivotable about the housing (12) whereby an angular spacing between the longitudinal extents of the arms (14) is adjustable so that the a ms (14) have a plurality of selectable working positions.
