In an engine starter, a cover member encloses a reduction gear unit and a pinion, and a cylindrical member serving as a yoke surrounds an electric motor. One end of the yoke remote from the cover member is closed by a disk-shaped plate. The other end of the yoke is fitted into an opening defined in the cover member, and an annular separator is disposed between the reduction gear unit and the electric motor. The disk-shaped plate and the annular separator are each provided with at least one axial protrusion engaging an inner surface of the yoke to achieve a desired mutual axial alignment between them. This eliminates the need for an additional step of machining or otherwise finishing the outer surface of the yoke with high precision, to thereby simplify the manufacturing process and lower the manufacturing cost of the yoke.
