In accordance with the present invention there is provided a stent insertion tool for insertion into a catheter prior to insertion of a balloon catheter having a stent crimped on the balloon. The tool is a rigid tubular member having a distal end for insertion into a catheter, a proximal for end for remaining outside of the catheter, and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween. The tool has a substantially smooth inner surface. The tool further includes a slot, having a predetermined width, extending along the longitudinal axis of the tubular member from its distal end to its proximal end.
