Integron integrases catalyze the capture and spread of promoterless open reading frames, known as gene cassettes, between diverse bacterial genera. The presence of a wide range of antibiotic resistance determinants within these gene cassettes is a major factor in the development of multiple drug resistance in Gram negative clinical isolates.
