This invention aims to provide a nitriding method of forming a relatively thick nitride layer on the surface of an aluminum material containing silicon, and an auxiliary agent for nitriding. By using a nitriding auxiliary agent mainly comprising aluminum containing a metal such as lithium or boron, which has a high bonding strength with oxygen, coexists with silicon to form substantially no silicide, or a nitriding auxiliary agent mainly comprising an Al-Mg-Cu alloy or an Mg-Zn-Cu alloy, heat treatment is applied by nitrogen gas with the aluminum material to be nitrided contacted with the nitriding auxiliary agent. Hence, a thick nitride layer can be easily formed even on the surface of an aluminum material containing silicon, and this is most suitable to surface nitride aluminum-silicon alloys, which possess superior castability.

Ce procédé de nitruration permet de former une couche de nitrure relativement épaisse sur une surface d'aluminium contenant du silicium. On décrit aussi un adjuvant de nitruration comprenant comme ingrédient principal de l'aluminium contenant un métal pouvant se lier solidement à l'oxygène, tel que le lithium ou le bore, et qui, lorsqu'il est en présence de silicium, ne forme pratiquement pas de siliciure, ainsi qu'un adjuvant de nitruration comprenant comme ingrédient principal un alliage aluminium-magnésium-cuivre ou magnésium-zinc-cuivre mis en contact avec de l'aluminium, lors d'un traitement thermique effectué en présence d'azote. Ceci permet de former facilement une couche épaisse de nitrure, également à la surface de l'alliage d'aluminium contenant du silicium. Ce procédé convient particulièrement pour nitrurer la surface d'un alliage aluminium-silicium qui présente une excellente coulabilité.
