A safety scalpel blade assembly comprising a scalpel blade (10), a guard (11) which extends at least about the cutting edge of the blade (10), and releasable attachment means (19) which releasably attach the blade (10) to the guard (11) as the assembly is being attached to the scalpel handle (12), thereby preventing the blade from cutting a person, but which releases the blade (10) from the guard (11) when the blade (10) is attached to the blade carrier (14) of the scalpel handle (12).
