A system and method is provided for reducing the time a user needs to wait for information requested from a remote server (538) on a communications network, for example, a Web server (182) on the Internet. In an exemplary embodiment the system is user centric and the goal is to keep all data the user needs as close to the user as practical. The user's characteristics and usage patterns are used to determine what to cache and for how long, what to pre-fetch, what to refresh, and what to retrieve. In addition, by segmenting information and utilizing parallel communication channels, data transfer across the last mile can be significantly increased.
L'invention a trait à un système et procédé visant à réduire le temps d'attente de l'utilisateur transmettant une demande d'informations à un serveur éloigné sur un réseau de transmission, par exemple un serveur Web sur Internet. Selon un mode de réalisation exemplaire, le système est centré sur l'utilisateur : le but est de stocker toutes les données nécessaires à ce dernier dans un endroit aussi proche de lui que possible. Les caractéristiques et habitudes d'utilisation de l'utilisateur servent à sélectionner les données à mettre dans la mémoire cache et décider de la durée de leur séjour dans cette mémoire, à sélectionner les données devant faire l'objet d'une lecture anticipée, d'un rafraîchissement et d'une extraction. De plus, la segmentation des informations et l'utilisation de voies de communication parallèles permettent d'accélérer sensiblement le transfert de données sur le dernier kilomètre.
