A system for manufacturing a book on demand includes a first printing unit for printing a first component of the book (i.e. a cover), a second printing unit for printing a second component of the book (i.e. a text block), and a binding station for binding the first component and the second component together. The system may further include a computer control system receiving information relating to the book to be manufactured, the information comprising information relating to the content of said first or second component and information relating to the finished size of the book. The computer control system initiates among other functions-manufacture of the first component by said first printing unit, receives a signal that the printing of the first component is successful and, after receipt of this signal, initiates printing of the second component by said second printing unit. The first component could be stored in a buffer until the second component is ready. The advantage of this hierarchy is that the process which is more time consuming and/or sensitive with respect to disturbances and/or more expensive can control the over-all process. Rejects of completed books not fulfilling the quality criteria are avoided and down-times minimized. Also avoided is the requirement to store the second component until the first component is ready.

Cette invention concerne un système permettant de fabriquer un livre à la demande et comprenant à cet effet une première unité d'impression destinée à imprimer un premier composant du livre (la couverture), une seconde unité d'impression destinée à imprimer un second composant du livre (la partie texte), et une station de reliure servant à relier le premier composant et le second composant l'un à l'autre. Ce système peut en outre comprendre un système de commande par ordinateur recevant des informations relatives au livre à fabriquer, ces informations comprenant des informations relatives au contenu du premier ou du second composant et des informations relatives à la taille finie du livre. Le système de commande par ordinateur initialise, parmi d'autres fonctions, la fabrication du premier composant par la première unité d'impression, il reçoit un signal indiquant que l'impression du premier composant est terminée avec succès et, après réception de ce signal, il initialise l'impression du second composant par la seconde unité d'impression. Le premier composant peut être stocké dans un tampon en attendant que le second composant soit prêt. L'avantage de cette hiérarchie réside dans le fait que le processus qui est le plus gourmand en temps et/ou le plus sensible aux perturbations et/ou le plus coûteux peut contrôler le processus global. Le rejet de livres terminés ne satisfaisant par aux critères de qualité est évité et les temps d'arrêt sont minimisés. On évite également la nécessité de stocker le second composant en attendant que le premier composant soit prêt.
