A tamping unit (1) for tamping sleepers of a track includes tamping tools (6) which are squeezable towards one another in pairs by means of squeezing drives (5) and mounted for pivoting about a swivel axis (11) on a vertically adjustable tool carrier (12). A tamping pick (8) intended for immersion in ballast is associated with each tamping tool (6) in the lower end region, the tamping pick being mounted on the tamping tool (6) for pivoting about a pivot axis (10) extending perpendicularly to the swivel axis (11) and being connected by means of a hinge point (25) to a pivot drive (16), designed as a hydraulic cylinder, for pivoting the tamping pick (8) in the longitudinal direction of the sleepers. The pivot drive (16) is linked to the tamping tool (6) via a hinge point (27). For assuming different operating positions, the pivot drive (16) is connected to an auxiliary drive (21) and linked to one of the two hinge points (27), while the auxiliary drive (21) is mounted to the other hinge point (25).
