A tamping unit (1) for tamping sleepers (2) of a track (3) is equipped with two tamping tine levers (4) which are supported on an assembly frame (6) for pivoting about a pivot axis (5) and are each connected to a squeezing drive (7) for pivoting in a longitudinal direction (9) of the unit. One tamping tine lever (4) has an inner receiving opening (10) and an outer receiving opening (11) which are arranged one following the other with regard to the longitudinal direction (9) of the unit and enable a selective fixation of the tamping tine (12). With that, adaptation to different sleeper spacings is possible.
