A thin membrane resonator has a thin membrane that is applied to the radiating face of any broadly tuned air-matched ultrasonic transducer. The membrane significantly improves the Sound Pressure Level (SPL) of the transducer in the transmitter mode and sensitivity of the transducer in the receiver mode. The membrane is turned to the operating frequency of the transducer by the thickness of the membrane for a prescribed gap between the transducer face and the membrane. The membrane also protects the radiating face of any broadly tuned air-matched ultrasonic transducer from chemical vapours.
