This invention relates to a toothbrush (10) having a handle (11) that can move relative to a head portion (12) equipped with rotatable bristle assemblies (14). The rotation of the bristles (32) of the bristle assemblies (14) is effected by manually operable drive means consisting of a rack (28) and a plurality of mating pinions (29) from which said bristles (32) extend. The rack (28) and the pinions (29) are enclosed within a housing.
