A track work machine (1) comprises a machine frame (5) supported at the ends on on-track undercarriages (4). An excavating device (7) is arranged at the rear end (22) with respect to an operating direction (6) of the machine. The excavating device has a ballast pick-up unit (23) located underneath a track (3) and a rearward - with respect to the operating direction - discharging end (17) for transferring the picked-up ballast (2) onto a conveyor belt (18). The rear on-track undercarriage (4) is mounted on the machine frame (5) for displacement from a transit position, located between the discharging end (17) and the ballast pick-up unit (23) of the excavating device (7), in the direction towards the front on-track undercarriage (4).
