A trailer hitch used to couple and decouple a trailer without the need of additional assistance. To hitch the vehicles together, one simply backs the tow vehicle containing the opened jaws to the trailer containing the protruding cylindrical shaft until the shaft is between the jaws. The operator then closes the jaws tightly around the shaft initializing the equalization and sway control characteristics. This hitch incorporates both equalizing and sway control characteristics automatically in one easy, fast and simple coupling operation. The main embodiment of the hitch consists of two pair of "pliers like jaws" attached to a horizontal steel tube mounted to a hitch draw bar. One pair of jaws are permanently affixed to this tube. The other pair of jaws move freely horizontally along the length of the tube creating an opening to accept a long cylindrical shaped extension of the ball shaft protruding downward from the trailer coupler. The amount of opening created by this sliding jaw will allow for generous misalignment variables between the tow and towed vehicles. The sliding pair of jaws are closed either mechanically, hydraulically or electrically. When closed the jaws provide a tight pinching action around the protruding ball shaft. This pinching provides excellent sway control forces. The base of the protruding ball shaft has a structural member extending back beneath the trailer tongue where it attaches vertically to the trailer frame member or members. When used in conjunction with the main embodiment jaws on the tow vehicle this combination will cause a lifting force when the jaws are closed, producing effective equalizing.
La présente invention vise un attelage de remorques servant à l'accouplement et au désaccouplement d'une remorque sans l'aide d'une autre personne. Pour atteler les deux véhicules, il suffit, après avoir ouvert les mâchoires de l'attelage, de reculer le véhicule tracteur contre la remorque présentant l'arbre cylindrique en saillie jusqu'à l'endroit précis où l'arbre sera enserré par ces mâchoires. Celles-ci doivent ensuite être refermées de manière à enserrer solidement l'arbre pour garantir un bon équilibrage et un bon contrôle de l'oscillation. Cet attelage garantit automatiquement en une opération simple et rapide un bon équilibrage et un bon contrôle de l'oscillation. La variante privilégiée de cette invention se compose essentiellement de deux paires de « pinces formant mâchoire » fixées à un tube d'acier horizontal monté sur le timon d'attelage de la remorque. Une paire de mâchoires est fixée en permanence à ce tube. L'autre paire de mâchoires se déplace librement à l'horizontale sur toute la longueur du tube pour créer une ouverture pouvant s'adapter à la forme cylindrique allongée d'un arbre se terminant par une boule et se prolongeant en-dessous du dispositif d'attelage de la remorque. La taille de l'ouverture formée par cette mâchoire coulissante compensera généreusement les défauts d'alignement entre le véhicule tracteur et le véhicule remorqué. La fermeture de la paire de mâchoires coulissantes est commandée par un processus mécanique, hydraulique ou électrique. Fermées, les mâchoires assurent une prise très serrée autour de l'arbre porteur de la boule. Cette prise serrée permet à son tour un bon contrôle de l'oscillation. La base de cet arbre porteur est munie d'une membrure se prolongeant sous la barre d'attelage de la remorque où elle est fixée verticalement aux composants du châssis de la remorque. Monté sur le véhicule tracteur avec les mâchoires de la variante privilégiée de cette invention, cet assemblage crée une force de soulèvement qui, une fois les mâchoires fermées, assure un équilibrage efficace.
