A two stroke internal combustion engine having a compressed air inlet port (13) and an exhaust port (14) the flow through which is controlled by suitable valves (3, 4). Fuel is injected through a fuel injector (5). The timing of the opening of the valve is such that as the piston (2) approaches top dead centre and with the air inlet valve (3) closed, the exhaust valve (4) is closed such that some exhaust gas is trapped and compressed in the combustion chamber thereby increasing the temperature within the combustion chamber and hence facilitating ignition. The invention also contemplates initiating combustion before the air inlet valve (3) is closed.

L'invention concerne un moteur à combustion interne deux temps présentant un orifice d'admission (13) d'air comprimé et un orifice d'échappement (14) à travers lesquels l'écoulement est régulé par des soupapes appropriées (3, 4). Du carburant est injecté par un injecteur (5) de carburant. Le réglage de l'ouverture de la soupape est tel qu'à mesure que le piston (2) approche du point mort haut et avec la soupape d'admission (3) d'air fermée, la soupape d'échappement (4) soit fermée de telle sorte qu'aucun gaz d'échappement ne soit piégé et comprimé dans la chambre de combustion, augmentant ainsi la température à l'intérieur de la chambre de combustion et par conséquent facilitant l'allumage.
