Disclosed is a vertical engine for outboard motors, having a cylinder block and a crank chamber. The engine comprises a skirt section provided integrally with said cylinder block, a split crankcase detachably attached to said skirt section with respective contacting faces thereof in mutual abutment to form said crank chamber, a cylinder wall provided in said cylinder block and partitioning adjacent upper and lower cylinders, said cylinder wall having a crankshaft bearing section within said crank chamber, said crankshaft bearing section being positioned to be accessible from the outside when said split crankcase is not attached to said skirt section, and an oil hole provided through said cylinder wall and communicating said upper cylinder with the lower cylinder to conduct the oil from the upper cylinder into the lower cylinder.
