A passive optical network is provided that spectrally slices optical signals transmitted in both upstream and downstream directions utilizing wavelength division multiplexing routing. The passive optical network preferably includes an incoherent signal source at both ends to provide signals that are spectrally sliced according to optical frequency. The downstream information may be transmitted in a conventional data format. The upstream transmissions may be segregated by subcarrier multiplexing, time scheduling or wavelength division multiplexing.

L'invention est un réseau optique passif qui effectue un découpage des signaux lumineux transmis vers l'amont et vers l'aval en utilisant un acheminement à multiplexage optique. Dans la concrétisation privilégiée de l'invention, ce réseau optique passif utilise à chacune de ses extrémités une source de signaux incohérents qui sont soumis à un découpage spectral basé sur la fréquence. Vers l'aval, l'information peut être transmise dans un format de données courant. Vers l'amont, les transmissions peuvent être groupées par un multiplexage de sous-porteuses, un ordonnancement temporel ou un multiplexage optique.
