ABSTRACT A system is disclosed for positioning a transducer with respect to a disk surface responsive to analog signals generated in the transducer. Equally spaced synchronization signals establish a lock between a voltage con- trolled oscillator and the rotating disk. Track seeking is accomplished using a Gray coded absolute track address system uniquely identifying each track. Once the target track is reached, an analog signal generated in response to odd numbered and even numbered bits on alternate tracks, produces a position error signal for returning the transducer to its centered position. Improved coarse positioning is the result of the sensing of transitions or zero crossings of the analog transducer signal for more reliable signal detection and closer spacing of servo information.
