The invention provides absorbable compositions for use as or in bone sealants. The compositions comprise, by weight: from 10% to 70% of a fibrous protein such as collagen; from 1% to 20% of a tackifying agent such as dextran; from 0.001% to 20% of a mucopolysaccharide such as hyaluronic acid; and from 10% to 80% of a physiologically acceptable electrolyte solution such as phosphate - buffered physiological saline. The compositions are malleable, absorbable, biocompatible and exhibit excellent storage properties at 30°C.
