The invention relates to an absorbant composite comprising a substrate (3) having an upper (19) and lower surface and a plurality of hydrogel-forming polymer particles (2) chemically bonded to at least one surface (19) wherein the polymer particles have a plurality of cross-linking molecules (9). The substrate and the hydrogel-forming polymer particles are connected by a cross- linking agent capable of cross-linking the molecules of the particles. In this manner the particles are firmly attached to the substrate in both the dry and wet state without negatively affecting the substrate's flexibility and while maintaining a desired permeability of the composite structure.
