An absorbent article, such as a disposable diaper, adult incontinent pad, sanitary napkin, and the like, is disclosed which has a rapid acquiring, multiple layer absorbent core. The absorbent article may be in an improved shape that can be worn in the wearer's usual undergarments. The absorbent article of the present invention comprises a liquid pervious topsheet, a liquid imper- vious backsheet, and a multiple layer absorbent core positioned between the topsheet and the backsheet. The multiple layer absor- bent core comprises at least one rapid acquiring acquisition/distribution layer and at least one storage layer positioned subjacent each acquisition layer. The acquisition/distribution layers have a fluid acquisition/distribution rate of at least about 2 cubic cen- timeters of synthetic urine per second when tested under a pressure of about 28 grams per square centimeter. The storage layers at least partially comprise a "high-speed" absorbent gelling material which is capable of reaching at least about 40 % of its absorp- tive capacity in less than or equal to about 10 seconds. A multiple layer absorbent core for an absorbent article is also disclosed.
