Abstract of Disclosure A matrix and its deployment is described, which when arranged as a dry or wetted absorbent in a respirator cartridge or airscrubbing equipment, will be more efective than existing systems because of a lower air pressure drop. In arrangement #1 the absorbent filter material is manufactured in long tube- like channels of equal diameter, running parallel to each other and in layers, filling the canister, pointing with their openinqs into the airflow. To achievethis a blotting paper-like material is converted into single sided corrugated sheets, rolled up tightly into the form of a cartridge and then inserted into a tubular container, so that the air flows in on the side through an entry port, and out on the other side through an exit port, having first passed through a multitude of fine channels, created by the corrugated cartridge. This way a very large surface comes in contact with the contaminated air flow, to facilitate a thorough exchange of vapours, fluids and chemicals, with very little pressuredrop. In arrangement #2 the absorbent material is manufactured into discs, about 100 to 150 mm diameter with a 35 mm hole in the center. Radial, spokelike separatorstrips 6 mm wide and 1 mm to 3 mm high, are on top of each disc, starting at thehole and reaching outward, and projecting beyond the edge of the disc by 6 mm. These discs are stacked in 2 sections of 20 to 50 each inside a tubular contain-er, the first stack is separated from the second by a divider, made from one of the discs with the center hole closed with non-porous material. The air flows in from one side through a small entry port, fills the central portion of the first stack (created by its holes) and is barred from flowing into the second stack by the divider. It is diverted through all the fine channels between the discs, gathers in the 6 mm space around the stack and flows to the second stack. There it flows inwards through the channels between the discs toward the center hole cavity (of the second stack) and exits through a small exit port. Wet or dry - this will also create very little pressure drop. In arrangement #3 plates or discs are also used, but the flow of the air throughthe gaps is not in parallel like in arrangement #2, but rather in series. Even though this creates a higher pressure drop, it also produces a longer interaction time.
