The invention concerns an absorbent insert for food packaging, the liquid- absorbing component of the insert being a superabsorbent polymer which, even at high pressure loads, can permanently absorb and hold large amounts of liquid in a previously unattainable manner, protects the food from bacterial attack, and prevents the packaged goods from contamination by migrating soluble constituents of the polymer. This combination of properties of the superabsorbent used is expressed by the quotient QSAP 0.3 from the equation: retention after the tea-bag test plus absorption against pressure (AAP) at 0.3 psi divided by the amount of soluble parts, the quotient being at least 20. Superabsorbents with properties of this type are obtained by using special crosslinking agent combinations. The invention further concerns a method of producing these inserts and their use in food packaging, as an ice-substitute and for protection against leakage in packaging for transport purposes.
