L'invention concerne un procédé de production de matériau absorbant présentant une meilleure capacité de sorption et comprenant des fibres cellulosiques qui subissent un traitement, en présence d'eau, avec une substance hydrophobe dont la surface spécifique est d'au moins 50 m?2¿/g, ce procédé consistant à mélanger la substance et les fibres lorsque ces dernières ont une siccité d'au moins 20 %. L'invention concerne également un matériau absorbant pouvant être obtenu par ce procédé; un article absorbant comprenant le matériau absorbant et un procédé de production d'une structure absorbante comprenant le matériau absorbant dont on a traité les fibres cellulosiques, en présence d'eau, avec une substance hydrophobe dont la surface spécifique est d'au moins 50 m?2¿/g, en mélangeant la substance et les fibres lorsque ces dernières ont une siccité d'au moins 20 %.
