ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Powder calcium sulphate having a water content in the range 0.1 to 1.6% by weight is especially effective in absorbing non-aqueous liquid, e.g. hydrocarbons. The calcium sulphate is prepared by heating in the temperature range 100 to 145°C e.g. for 60 to 90 minutes. Microwave heating is preferred.
