ABSTRACT A method for operating a continuous rotary carburizing furnace is disclosed, wherein a carburizing mixture is introduced into the furnace retort without inerts while an inert gas is introduced into the shell of the furnace without carbon containing gases. The method effects an increase in productivity through an increased rate of carburization of work pieces with less carburization or sooting of the furnace apparatus.
