A process is provided for treating the sludge in the tailings pond of a plant which uses the hot water process for extracting bitumen from oil sand. A predetermined quantity of a cationic surfactant is added to the sludge and the mixture is retained for a predetermined time. The mixture is aerated to flocculate and float off the fines and the residual oil, a portion of which is removed. As a result the sedimentation of the sludge is thereby accelerated.

On présente un procédé visant à traiter les boues résiduelles d'un réservoir accumulant les déchets produits dans une usine procédant à l'extraction, au moyen du procédé à base d'eau chaude, du bitume des sables bitumineux. Un émulsifiant à base de cations est ajouté en quantité déterminée aux boues résiduelles et on laisse reposer le mélange pour un temps déterminé. Ce mélange est ensuite aéré afin de provoquer une floculation et une flottation des débris fins et de l'huile résiduelle, dont on procède à l'extraction partielle. La sédimentation des boues résiduelles s'en trouve accélérée.
