ACCESS DOOR ABSTRACT This invention is directed to a novel fire- proof self-closing access door which is utilized in the walls, ceilings and floors of buildings, and the like, to enable a person to gain access to a valve r or other equipment, located in the wall, ceiling or floor behind, above or underneath the access door. The invention is directed to a self-locking access door having an exteri- or and an interior surface for use in providing a clos- able opening in a surface area comprising: (a) a door means which is pivotally mounted by a hinge means on a frame means which has an exterior and an interior sur- face corresponding respectively to the exterior and interior surfaces of the door means, (b) a self-closing latch means mounted on the interior surface of the door means; (c) latch securing means mounted on the interior surface of the-frame means for securing the latch means and the door means in a closed position when the latch means engages with the latch securing means; and (d) resilient spring means which is secured to and extends between the interior surface of the door means and the interior surface of the frame means, the resilient spring means becoming distorted and storing return energy as the door means is opened outwardly from the frame means, the end of the resilient spring means oppo- site to that engaging the door means being formed to travel along a guide means on the frame means as the door means is opened or closed relative to the frame means.
