A backing plate for an acetabular reamer assembly allows attachment of a reamer driver. The assembly comprises a cutting cup and backing plate, the cup having an external surface with cutting teeth formed therein and having an internal surface, the cup terminating in a peripheral edge. The rigid backing plate is planar and terminates in an outer circumferential edge, the outer edge coupling to the peripheral bottom edge of the cutting cup. The rigid plate has an internal edge profile. With at least two finger elements protruding from the outer edge towards a central vertical axis perpendicular to the plane of the plate. The finger elements form a holding opening for a reamer driver. The internal edge profile forms at least one observation opening in addition to the holding opening to allow bone fragments within the reamer to be inspected while in use. The finger elements terminate to form a contact surface with the inserted driver. The internal edge profile is continuous for simplified machining of the backing plate.
