A method and apparatus for generating high quality acid or base in an aqueous stream for use in analysis, particularly, for use as an ion chromatography eluent. Water (10) is supplied to an ion exchange bed (14) where an electrical potential (33) is applied, generating an acid using an anion exchange bed or a base using a cation exchange bed. The generated acid or base is flowed through a sample valve (16), an ion chromatograph (18) and a suppressor (20) before being analyzed in a detector (22).

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil servant à générer dans un courant aqueux un acide ou une base de qualité supérieure, destinés à l'analyse et utilisés notamment comme éluant en chromatographie par échange d'ions. On alimente en eau (10) un lit échangeur d'ions (14) auquel est appliqué un potentiel électrique (33) pour générer un acide au moyen d'un lit échangeur d'anions ou une base au moyen d'un lit échangeur de cations. On fait circuler l'acide ou la base générés à travers une vanne d'échantillonnage (16), un chromatographe (18) par échange d'ions et un suppresseur (20) avant de l'analyser dans un détecteur (22).
