2'3,'-dideoxynucleosides which are effective in inhibiting the infectivity of the human immunodeficiency virus and which are stable in an acidic environment are disclosed, which compounds conform to the formula: (see fig. I) wherein X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, F, CN, N3 and NO2; Y is either H or F; with the proviso that Y is F only when X=H. Also disclosed is a compound of the formula: (see fig. II) Also disclosed are compounds conforming to the formula: (see fig. III) wherein R may be either OH or NH2; and L is NH2. Also disclosed are compounds conforming to the formula: (see fig. IV) wherein A is selected from the group consisting of OH and NH2; B is selected from the group consisting of H, CH3, CF3, CH=CHBr, and halogen.
