The bonding of cereal straw in the face layer of a composite panel is carried out with urea formaldehyde (UF) resin or melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF) resin in combination with acid. The treatment consists of applying either a strong or weak acid to straw at levels below 10% of the oven-dry (OD) mass. This results in a drop in straw pH and straw buffering capacity which facilitates the bonding of the straw with OF or MUF in a heated platen press. The treatment allows the straw-based composite panels to achieve properties in excess of commercial standards without using MDI exclusively. The acid can be applied to the straw at various stages of comminution before panel pressing.
