Systems and methods for the treatment of fine tailings from solvent extraction of bitumen froth tailings are described. The systems include an acidic filter mix tank having an acid, coal/coke, and a high molecular weight anionic flocculant. The methods include mixing the fine tailings with the acid, coal/coke, and anionic flocculant and filtering the mixture to produce a filter cake and a filtrate from which demineralized water can be produced.
