A coloring indicator, such as metanil yellow, whose color changes in an acidic environment and a polyalcohol, such as glycerin, are applied over a carrier of porous material. The object gas dissolves in the water absorbed in the polyalcohol and reacts quickly with the coloring indicator. As the degree of reaction is proportional to the amount of the gas, differences in the concentration of the object gas can be accommodated by adjusting the exposure time.
