The invention relates to an acoustic biosensor comprising a super-nonwetting or a super-wetting surface. The surface is designed for attachment of one half of a biomolecular pair so that when the other half of a biomolecular pair interacts with the attached half, a detectable change in surface free energy of the biosensor occurs. Should an aqueous solution be used with the acoustic biosensor, the super-nonwetting or super- wetting properties are understood to be super-hydrophobic or super-hydrophilic properties, respectively. The invention advantageously allows enhanced sensitivity relative to conventional acoustic biosensors.
