ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A method and a device for detecting cracks in metal pieces having a same shape and made of a same metal, for example hardened steel grinder balls. This detecting device comprises a mechanical assembly including an anvil and especially designed to produce an impact between an actually tested metal piece and the anvil, this impact generating an acoustic wave formed of a plurality of components. One of these wave components is produced by vibrations of the metal piece and has a frequency indi- cating a cracked or uncracked state of the metal piece. A microphone is provided for sensing the acoustic wave generated by the impact and for delivering a signal representative thereto. A measuring circuit receiving the signal from the microphone, and including in series an amplifier, a band-pass filter, a rectifier and an integrator, measures the energy, within a predetermined time gate and within a predetermined frequency bandwidth, of the above-mentioned one component of the generated acoustic wave, the predetermined frequency bandwidth being defined by the transmission bandwidth of the band-pass filter. Of course, the anvil is designed so that its vibrations produced by the impact generate no wave component at a frequency included within the predetermined frequency bandwidth, whereby the crack detection is not disturbed by any acoustic wave component generated by the anvil. A logic circuit is also provided to synchronize the measure operation of the measuring circuit in accordance with the moment of occurrence of the impact between the actually tested metal piece and the anvil, and to control this measure operation. The integrated signal representative of the measured energy from the integrator is compared with a reference through a comparator which provides an output indicating if the actually tested metal piece is cracked or uncracked. The detecting device may be used in a device for sorting cracked and uncracked metal pieces, which sorting device comprises for example a deflector tube operated in accordance with the output of the comparator to deflect the cracked and uncracked metal pieces towards respective storing locations.
