ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An acoustic diffractometer which comprises: a substrate; and at least two layers of semi-insulating, acoustically mismatched material on said substrate. The acousto-physical properties of each of the layers differs one from the other thereby defining an acoustically mismatched superlattice. There is also provided, preferably, means for launching an acoustic wave in the device and receiving outputs of said device. More preferably, input and output ports are located respectively, at alternate ends of the superlattice, or in another embodiment on the same side of the superlattice. More preferably still, multiple interdigital transducers may selectively be used as input and output ports, respectively, to enable a selectivity of response characteristics to the user. The material on the substrate comprises epitaxially grown layers of semi-conducting material, preferably a material in the cubic class 43m, particularly from the II-VI or III-V compound semiconductor group.
