ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The multipole acoustic wave logging device of this invention includes a logging sonde, means for generating a 2n-pole acoustic wave in a virgin earth formation surround- ing a borehole but separated from the borehole by an invaded zone, where n is an integer greater than zero, and means for detecting the refracted arrival of the 2 -pole acoustic wave. In the preferred embodiment the generating means com- prises four similar sectors of a hollow piezoelectric cylin- der. The four sectors are polarized radially and are so con- nected to the sonde that they are in the form of a split cylinder coaxial with the sonde axis. Electrical pulses are applied across the inner and outer cylindrical surfaces of each sector. The electrical pulses are of such polarities that adjacent sectors vibrate radially in substantially oppo- site phase. The vibrations of the sectors will generate com- pressional waves in the borehole liquid which will interfere to produce a quadrupole acoustic wave in the surrounding earth formation. The acoustic wave will be refracted in the virgin formation and detected by the detecting means. The detecting means comprises two detectors in the borehole spaced apart longitudinally from each other and from the gen- erating means. If the 2n-pole acoustic wave is a compres- sional wave, the compressional wave velocity of the virgin formation is determined from the time interval between detec- tions of the refracted arrival of the 2n-pole acoustic wave -51- by the two detectors. If the 2n-pole acoustic wave is a shear wave, the shear wave velocity of the virgin formation may similarly be determined. The radius of the invaded zone may be determined from the compressional wave velocity in the virgin formation and in the invaded zone or from the shear wave velocity in the virgin formation and in the invaded zone.
