A catheter, an acoustic septum and method for diagnosing body interiors utilizing the transmission and receiving of ultrasonic waves generated therewith. The catheter includes an elongated catheter sheath (14) with a proximal end open to the atmosphere and an acoustic septum (21) disposed at the distal end thereof. The septum is formed of a flexible sheet or tube (24) of forminous thermoplastic material, the depths of the foramina (22) being at a predetermined ratio relative to their diameters. A hydrophilic coating (23) is disposed on the sheet or tube (24) and covers at least the edges of the foramina (22) to allow the passage of liquid therethrough to fill the sheath (14). The coating (23) is absorbent of the liquid to close the foramina (22) and prevent the passage of liquids in either direction. A mechanism (11) for generating and receiving ultrasonic waves is disposed within the distal end of the catheter and is in an operating relationship with the septum (21) whereby to enable the mechanism (11) to be bathed in the fluid and enable sonic transmissions.

L'invention porte sur un cathéter, un septum acoustique et un procédé permettant d'effectuer des diagnostics internes à l'aide d'ultrasons auto-produits. Le cathéter comporte une gaine allongée (14) dont l'extrémité proximale s'ouvre à l'air libre et dont l'extrémité distale est pourvue d'un septum acoustique (21). Ledit septum est fait d'une feuille ou d'un tube (24) d'un matériau thermoplastique (foramine) (22) dont l'épaisseur et le diamètre sont dans un rapport donné. Un revêtement hydrophile (23) disposé sur la feuille ou le tube (24) recouvre au moins les bords de la foramine (22) pour permettre le passage du liquide en vue du remplissage de la gaine (14). Le revêtement (23) en absorbant le fluide ferme la foramine (22) et empêche le passage de liquides dans les deux directions. Le mécanisme (11) d'émission/réception d'ultrasons logé à l'extrémité distale du cathéter est en liaison fonctionnelle avec le septum (21) de façon à permettre son (11) immersion dans le fluide et la transmission des ultrasons.
