Acrolein copolymers prepared from acrolein and one or more polyhydric alcohols, which will release monomeric acrolein in an aqueous system and hence have a prolonged effect on microorganisms. The copolymer is prepared by adding acrolein to a reaction medium containing one or more polyhydric alcohols and a catalyst in dissolved form, while not allowing the temperature of the reaction medium to rise above 50°C. The acrolein-releasing copolymer may be used in aqueous systems as a biocide.

Copolymères d'acroléine préparés à partir de l'acroléine et d'un ou plusieurs alcools polyhydriques, qui libèrent de l'acroléine monomère dans un système aqueux et exercent de ce fait un effet prolongé sur les microorganismes. Le polymère est préparé par addition d'acroléine à un milieu réactionnel renfermant un ou plusieurs alcools polyhydriques et un catalyseur sous forme dissoute, en maintenant la température de la réaction à 50 °C. Le copolymère libérant l'acroléine peut être employé comme biocide dans des systèmes aqueux.
