ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for forming a copper-nickel-silica catalyst and the catalyst is disclosed having a nickel surface area of about 55 to about 100 m2/g and a total surface area of 150 to 300 m2/g, the process comprising the steps of comingling a solution containing containing copper and nickel cations with a solution containing silicate anions, coprecipitating the copper nickel and silicate ions in an aqueous solution onto solid carrier particles. The use of this catalyst in a hydrogenation process is also disclosed.
