ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a method and apparatus in a telecommunication system for activating means from an idle state to an active state. Activation may take place either from the subscriber side or from the station side. In acti- vation from the subscriber side an activation request signal is sent from a subscriber to the code transmitter in the net- work terminal. The code transmitter sends a continuous cyclic bit pattern to the line terminal, in which the pattern is detected in the code receiver, and the activation request is sent to said station which then sends the activation order to the line terminal. The frame code generator is activated and sends frame-formatted data and synchronizing signal back again to the network terminal. The local clock in the net- work terminal is synchronized conventionally with the rate from the master clock from the incoming data flow. After detecting frame format and frame synchronism, the frame de- tector sends the activation order to the subscriber and furthermore activates said frame code generator for transmis- sion of frame formatted data back again to the line terminal. The information is detected in the latter in a second frame detector which, for discovered frame format and frame syn- chronism, sends acknowledgement signals to the station, whereat the activation sequence is completed. In activation from the station side, the activation order goes directly from the station without a preceding activation request from the subscriber.
