Abstract Copper salts are used to catalyze the oxidation of phenols to benzoquinone. In the process, a portion of the copper catalyst forms an insoluble precipitate which lacks catalytic activity. This inactive complex can be regenerated by adding to it from 0.001 mole to 1.0 mole per gram of inactive complex of at least one acid selected from the group of sulfuric, hydrochloric, nitric, tri- fluoroacetic, phosphoric, perchloric or toluene sulfonic acid and heating the mixture.
