Improvements are dis- closed in apparatus and tech- niques for activating an im- plantable medical device (10), such as a neurostimula- tor adapted to treat and con- trol a disorder of a patient (30) where the disorder is sus- ceptible to relief in response to predetermined modulation of the electrical activity of a selected nerve (25) or group of nerves of the patient. The neurostimulator (10) includes a stimulus generator respon- sive, when activated, to gen- erate a programmable electri- cal waveform, and an elec- trode array electrically con- nected to the stimulus genera- tor for delivering the wave- form to a selected nerve of the patient, such as the vague nerve. The neurostimulator is also adapted to be programmed to provide the waveform with parameter values selected to stimulate the selected nerve to produce the predetermined modulation of the nerve's electrical activity. The neurostimulator is implemented to respond to a patient initiat- ed signal which may be derived either manually or automatically to selectively activate the stimulus generator.
